@paul39921982, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The “There is a problem with the printer or ink system” message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus usually indicates either a hardware issue, a cartridge detection error, or a clogged/failed printhead. Since you've already installed brand new cartridges, here’s a step-by-step guide to try and fix it:
🔧 Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:
Perform a Power Reset
- With the printer ON, disconnect the power cable from the back.
- Unplug from the wall outlet.
- Wait 1-2 minutes.
- Plug it directly into a wall outlet (no surge protector or power strip).
- Reconnect the power to the printer and turn it on.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridges
- Open the ink cartridge access door.
- Remove all cartridges.
- Wipe the electrical contacts (copper-colored area) gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Reinstall them one by one and ensure each clicks into place.
Clean the Printhead
If the error persists, try this:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to: Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead
- Run the cleaning cycle 2–3 times if necessary.
Manual Printhead Cleaning (if needed)
- Remove the ink cartridges.
- Lift the latch inside the printer to remove the printhead assembly (be careful—it can be messy).
- Clean the bottom of the printhead (where ink comes out) using a damp lint-free cloth.
- You can also soak the printhead in warm distilled water for a few minutes, then let it dry thoroughly before reinstalling.
Update Firmware (if accessible)
If you can get into the printer menu or HP Smart software, check for firmware updates. Sometimes bugs in the ink system are resolved this way.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
