, Welcome to HP Support Community!

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

Hope this helps!

I can print a test page from my desktop computer, I can print a test page from the printer, I can copy from my printer but when I want to print a page from the website that I'm on nothing happens. When I right click to print the printer preview pops up, then when I click print nothing happens. I've unplugged & plugged in everything, I've rebooted the computer, I used the HP doctor-it says everything is fine do I want to print a test page & it does. Why can't I print directly from my desktop using the r click or the CTRL P? This has been going on for a couple of months now.  I use google chrome. Thanks.

I've had firmware updates off though so I don't know why it differently it suddenly stopped.

Now my problem is trying to get my printer and desktop connected to the network. My desktop only has ethernet, and printer is throwing a fit when wifi is on.

I'm going to try the reset you mention. As it is fright now it's a big paper weight, so I may as well try it. I have the old firmware of I need to roll out back, unless HP have managed to put a block on that too.  😏

Thank you

Hi @emily2312,

I'd like to help!

To assist better -

  1. Are you able to make copies using the printer ?
  2. What exactly happens when you try and print ? Does the printer respond or do you receive an error message?
  3. Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz? If yes, make sure the dual band has different SSIDs for 2.4G and 5G networks.
  4. What is the distance between the router and the printer?
  5. Are the printer and Mac connected to the same network?

Keep me posted.

Hi

I have been using my MacBook Pro with my printer for about 6 weeks and all of a sudden it wouldn't connect - I get the following message:

Unable to connect to ‘HP ENVY Photo 6200 series [4D81EA]._ipps._tcp.local.’ due to an error.

I have tried switch on/off, reset the printer on the Mac, have reset wireless settings on printer and started again but I get the same error.

Can anyone help?

Edits - Add information for "Offline" doctor

One thing that can cause the printer to fall off the network is the manner in which a dual band network is configured.

Router / network configuration does not precisely explain "catatonic" though it might explain why the printer is unable to respond.

The printer supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz but not at the same time.

If your router supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz,

Make sure the router is broadcasting on both bands.

Create a unique SSID network name for each band.

The password can be the same for both networks.

Connect the printer to the SSID network name you intend to use.

Resource – Choose the right doctor for the job

Open Website

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Click the orange Download Now option / box

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared

THEN

Select / Answer question “Is print offline?” = YES

Answering Yes selects the “right doctor” version for these issues.

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties> Tab General>

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Verify results.  If necessary, set the newly added / renamed printer as the default.

A secondary “Scan” printer may be added, that is, the “Do not Delete” driver / printer.  As it says, do not delete the entry.

I ran the HP Doctor application and it installed something requiring a reboot of my computer (new drivers perhaps?). I'll see if the problem happens again.

I would really prefer not to have separate names for my 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands to avoid having to set up Wifi again on everything that only supports 2.4GHz. Most of the devices I have that support 5GHz can seamlessly switch to 2.4GHz is they lose the 5GHz band as they get further from the router.

So changing the router is a not possible as this is using a university halls wifi - and frankly who changes a router to make a printer work.

I will try the print an scan doctor once I can get on the website - is currently telling me service is unavailable.

This printer could well be soon living in a box and going on an adventure bac to HP.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw keeps initializing after hardware update

I ran a hardware update on my printer on 4/22/21 as I was receiving a driver update message on the device.  After the driver update completed, the printer kept initializing.  Today, it started displaying a "79 Service Error" turn printer off then on.  I can't do anything because the initialization process starts again after a few seconds.  I looked HP.com for the initialization issue and was advised to factory reset the printer by unplugging it while it was on, unplugging it from the surge protector, plug it in to a wall outlet and wait for the printer to go into an idle state.  It then started displaying the "79 Service Error."  I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point since the device keeps initializing.

Printer keeps giving error 49.   It restarts itself and after restarting the scanner is moving as if scanning.  then the printer errors again and turns itself off and on again.  HP help website is down.

Not sure what to do.  If anyone can help, please let me know.

Ok - that's fine.

Topic Learn about wireless routers

Section Dual Band wireless routers

Excerpted

The wireless world is in a transition from 2.4GHz to 5GHz, so router makers came up with dual-band routers that can handle both frequency bands.

  • Switchable dual-band routers can operate in either band, but not both at the same time.
  • Simultaneous dual-band routers will provide both bands at the same time.

A unique Network Name (SSID) is typically configured for each frequency band so the user knows which band a device is connected to (for example YourNet 2.4 and YourNet 5.0). However they can be configured to share the same Network Name. This looks simpler to people connecting to a home wireless network, but it can be a problem if your dual band network does not route traffic between the two bands.

If in doubt, connect the device you are printing from to the same frequency band as the printer.

==============================================================================

You can also try changing the connection type to TCP/IP.

Doing so might help though it does not impact how / if / whether the router is routing traffic.

The doctor does implement a form of this setup - you can also manually set the connection type.

Method - Create TCP IP port (Inkjet Printer)

Find printer's IP /  IPv4 address

Print a Configuration Page

OR

Tap on the wireless icon on Printer Control / Display Panel

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer > Left-Click Printer Properties

Select Tab Ports  > Add Port

Select Standard TCP/IP Port> New Port and follow the wizard.
Use / Enter IP address for the printer.

Example - How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by greenturtle

Video:  Create & Use TCP IP port
“Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)”

University WiFi is not the same as controlling your own network.

If you wish to do so,

If the printer supports it,

Consider using Wi-Fi Direct as a way to connect the printer to your computer using the Wireless radio in the printer.

Read first, then decide...

Wireless printing center  > Printer Setup > Wi-Fi Direct

NEW HP Laserjet Pro M102a won't connect to Microsoft Word and thus won't print

$

Hi, we bought a new printer and it won't print.  We have downloaded software and drivers, worked through HP Print and Scan Dr., gone to a number of help pages--still no go. The printer shows up on the control panel devices and printers page and is marked as the default printer. We have run the troubleshooter in Microsoft countless times.

When we try to print, the printer says "ready", then when we hit print, it says "unable to connect". There is a link entitled Connect to Printer under that, and if you click on that, Microsoft Word opens a box that says "Microsoft Word could not connect to HP LaserJet M101-106 PCLm-s." There is a link to click for help in connecting the printer; nothing on that Office help page does the trick.

Thanks in advance for anything you can suggest that will make this connection work.

Unidentified icon on printer screen

There is an unidentified icon that pops up randomly on the printer icon screen.  It's below the graduated lines and above the black ink graph.  Very small.  Looks like a business envelope with 2 other VERY small images that I cannot discern even with a magnifying glass.  It's trying to tell me something but what?  After ignoring for a couple days, it goes away.  Printer works just fine with or without that icon.  But am curious:  what's it about?  Thanks!

HPFB919B HP Officejet 7740 Wide format All in one Printer. Until recently printing PDF's was fine in colour & Best quality, now my PDF's print out in Draft and Black and White. No Idea if it is due to a Microsoft update, I've uninstalled the HP software and drivers and have reinstalled several times, but it has made no difference. I can print PDF's from my phone or tablet and they print as they should so. So I'm lost as to what to do next.
