My HP 8600 just stopped printer a couple of days ago.  It shows "general printer error" and says there is a problem with the printer or ink system, but no number provided.  You can't get off the error screen.  turning off, unplugging and reversing per solution 1 on the screen does not help.  Any ideas?

Do you face the same issue when making photocopies?

Try cleaning the Printhead and let me know if that works

  1. Load plain paper into the input tray.

  2. Search Windows for your printer model name, and then click the printer name in the list of results.

    HP Printer Assistant opens.

  3. Click Maintain Your Printer.

    The printer toolbox opens.

  4. On the Device Services tab, click Clean Cartridges .

A Print Quality Diagnostic page prints.

Figure : Print Quality Diagnostic page

Example of a Print Quality Diagnostic page
  5. Examine the Print Quality Diagnostic page.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, click Done. You can stop troubleshooting.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, click Second-level Clean to continue the next level of cleaning.

NOTE: If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform both levels of cleaning again.

I have looked at your whole website where thousands of people are having this issue but do not see that HP has published a solution.  Updating the software and clearing the cache does not solve the problem.  How can I stop my HP 7520 printer from spitting out paper with one printed line "Cookie:  mstshash+Administr" in the middle of the night?

Officejet 5740 all in one not printing but otherwise connected

Problem:

I am unable to print from any application but I am able to connect to the printer, print test pages, and scan documents.

System Setup:

  • Windows 10 64bit
  • Firmware version: NPM5CN1830AR
  • Software version: 040.013.1176.1978
  • Printer driver version: 20.80.2.7578
  • Printing wirelessly over home network

Troubleshooting to date:

  • I have scanned documents over my home network successfully to my computer.
  • I have connected to the printer web page by typing in the raw ip address in the form of ###.###.#.#
  • I have printed a test page successfully from the printer web page.
  • I have followed the instructions given by NOLA_Chump in this post.
    • This involves a full uninstall and reinstall of drivers
    • This also includes updating folder permissions
  • I have run the windows printer troubleshooter - no problems detected
  • I have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor - no problems detected
  • I am able to successfully print from another computer - indicating this is a problem with my computer and not the printer or network.
  • I have manually stopped and restarted the Printer spool service
  • I have turned off all antivirus and firewalls when attempting to print

Notes:

I am at a loss for what could be going on or what setting I need to change. There seems to be an issue between the application and windows sending the information to the printer. Any help is appreciated.

I have gone through your Post and I would like to help

Please perform a printer Reset and also ensure the Firmware is up to date

- Turn on the printer.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. If your printer has a network or wireless connection, leave it connected.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to a wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
- Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.

No new firmware available.

There was a new Mac driver software which I've installed - no help.

The loud clicking definitely sounds like a hardware problem (although in 1972, I did write software that made an IBM line printer sound pretty similar).

Re: Continuous Paper Jams

Thanks for trying to help.   The "solution" I should have done was never purchase an HP Product in the first place.   My "original" HP Printer lasted almost 8 years and then I replaced it last year.   The first HP started jamming immediately, the store replaced that one.  That one began jamming within one month and was replaced by HP.   The replacement starting jamming almost immediately as well until I had it about 2 months and even with HP's help the jam could not be fixed.   They just sent the replacement printer without a printhead and instructed me to use the one from the printer that was being replaced.   Of course the error stated that "you cannot switch printheads" even though I was instructed by HP to do just that.   So they decided to replace the printer they just sent me and will be sending another printhead under separate cover.   Both should be here by Wednesday at the latest.   Now the 6 Million Dollar question is whether the "new" printer and printhead will work or not.  Now I have an extended warranty with HP which I bought once I realized the products they were producing now are crap.   Frustrated does not even touch how I feel at this point.  I appreciate you trying to help to the question I posted BEFORE I realized that HP Support and HP have absolutely no idea what they are doing and that they do not care one bit about their customers.  All I wanted when I went out and purchased a replacement printer last August is a product that would be as good if not better than the one I had that finally gave out after almost 8 years.    Silly me!

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

I suggest you uninstall the printer driver from root level and download the full feature software

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions

Keep me posted how it goes 😊

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Let's try to put the old ink cartridge and then uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP DeskJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04675142

If the issue continues, uninstall and reinstall printer Basic drivers from the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-officejet-3830-all-in-one-printer-series/7172321/model/7172322/swItemId/mp-147828-2

If the issue still continues, install using Using the Windows Built-in Print DriverClick here

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Re: margin adjustment

If you are using HP Smart for iOS...

Observations (current at this writing):

There are only a few controls - and these differ a bit depending on what type of file you are printing.

HP Smart - iOS and Android - Download, How-to, Videos, and FAQ

HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS)

If you want to change the specifics in a document, for example, you pretty much have to edit the document before you send it to print.  This would include fonts, structure, and margins, at least to the extent that the HP Smart will tolerate the settings.  For example, you might be able to set very small margins in your Pages document only to see those margins auto-adjusted by the software to "fit" or "fill" the document page onto the paper.  Conversely, you might set exceedingly small margins in your Pages document (for example) only to see the document content cut off when printed.  Nonetheless, to the extent that it is supported at all, margins and other document formatting are best completed within the document before the document is submitted to print.

Images suffer a similar restriction - the mobile version of the Smart software likely does NOT support borderless printing in spite of whether the printer itself supports this feature.  Other features are supported.  For example, the latest version of HP Smart does support fit, fill, original size, and "resize" (manually adjusting the size of the print on the paper.

If you can get to a Windows machine...

HP Smart for Windows is a bit "smarter" than the mobile version - more of the printer's features are available using the Windows version of the software.  For example, to the extent that the printer supports borderless printing (and not all printers do so), the software supports borderless printing at least on the standard supported paper sizes.  HP Smart for Windows supports printing multiple images on a single paper, too.

Like the iOS version of the software, Windows documents are best formatted before being submitted to print using HP Smart for Windows, including creating the margins and structure wanted / needed in the document.  There is a bit more leeway in selecting print format when using HP Smart for Windows - for example, the booklet print option is supported.

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

Please ensure your Mac and Printer have the latest updates

Printer Firmware: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Mac update: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2015

After checking all those details, Remove and Re-add the printer using Airprint. AirPrint is an Apple technology that helps you create full-quality printed output without the need to download or install drivers.

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint or Secure AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

6.) Try to print in Color

Let me know how it goes😊

Hi

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Which version of macOS are you using?

Have you tried printing different types of documents like Word or Webpages with graphics and check if the issue persists?

This seems like an application-specific issue with Adobe Reader.

Update/reinstall the Adobe application on your MAC and try printing

Also, check for software updates on your MAC. Click here to know how.

If the issue persists, try printing the file as an Image PDF, refer to this document to know how.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
