Ok. I solved the mystery myself.  It appears that the default option is scan to pdf. But there is a small ">" next to the 'pdf'  on the printer screen which reveals a dropdown box of selections -- one of wich is 'save as jpg'

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Are you having issues only while printing from Microsoft office or from other applications as well.

Let's try these steps here:

Follow these steps to print a Print Quality Diagnostic report.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4 size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup.

    The Setup menu displays.

  3. Touch Reports, and then touch Print Quality Report.

A Print Quality Diagnostic page prints.

Evaluate the report for any defects.

  • If there are defects found, try the steps mentioned in this document
  • If there are no defects, try these steps -

Step 1 HP Print and Scan Doctor -

Click on this link to download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor

Step 2- Let's uninstall the printer from the root level and then reinstall it.

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.
  • If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Please click here (Please select the correct version of Windows before downloading and installing the printer software).
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Alternatively, try updating the printer firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Let me know how it goes!

I printed the quality printer report and none of the black ink prints.

I have double-checked the black ink cartridge.  The ink area is not clogged.

I have rebooted the printer.

I have printed several test documents from different sources.

This was printing with no problems until several days ago.

You can not use the regular cartridges when it asks for setup cartridges.

If you do not have the cartridges,  you can either contact HP support to get the setup cartridges.

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website.

For more assistance, please visit this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware  Restart the printer once done.

If you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue, I would personally suggest this could be a possible hardware failure with the printer.

I would recommend you contact our HP support team for further assistance.

HP support can be reached on www.hp.com/contacthp

Select the product type.

Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.

Select the country from the drop-down.

You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Re: HP Envy 4524 Copying Issue

Welcome to HP Forums!

I have a few steps to help you out:

For slow performance issues, try the below steps:

Certain settings can impact copy speed, including incorrect paper type selected and higher quality levels.

  1. Touch Copy, Copy Document, or Copy Photo on the printer control panel.

  2. Touch Settings or the gear icon to access and change the following settings.

    NOTE:

You might need to scroll down the screen to access all settings.

    • Paper Type: Copy speed can be impacted if photo paper is selected for a plain paper copy job. Select the type of plain or photo paper you are making the copies on.

Additionally, you can open and close the paper tray to display a prompt on the control panel to confirm the paper type that is loaded.

    • Tray Selection: Select the paper input tray with the paper you are using for your copies.

    • Quality: Select a lower available copy quality level.

    • Draft Mode: Turning on Draft Mode speeds up copying, but reduces quality.

  3. Select Save Current Settings or Set as New Defaults to retain the settings for future copy jobs.

  4. Load the original document or photo, and then start a copy job.

And to resolve the issue with the wrong color in copies, among others I suggest using the steps mentioned in this link: Click here for details > Under Poor resolution, colors are incorrect, or blurry text).

Let me know how that pans out,

@ptgproblem

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  1. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

Remove the ink cartridges to clean the ink cartridge and printhead contacts and then reinstall the ink cartridges into the printer.

   CAUTION:

Clean the ink cartridges one at a time. Do not leave an ink cartridge outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. Also, never turn off the printer when an ink cartridge is removed from its slot. Leaving ink cartridge slots empty might cause damage to the ink cartridge ink system.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • A clean, lint-free cloth

    • A clean, dry cotton swab

    • Distilled or bottled water

         CAUTION:

Do not use tap water, platen cleaners, or alcohol because they might contain contaminants that can damage the contacts.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the left side of the printer.

    NOTE:

If the scanner lid is open, the ink cartridge access door does not open.

Figure : Opening the ink cartridge access door

    Open the cartridge access door
  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

  4. Press the tab inward on the front of the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull up on the ink cartridge to remove it from the slot.

I doubt but is possible. The printer worked for a long time conected to my PC. I just moved it to another room. Do you think that can cause a hardware problem?

Nevermind I bought an Canon printer today. I am not disappointed with my old HP printer. But I need a printer I can touch without distroing it! 😁
