Just quit printing black

$

Just recently my HP Officejet 6962 quit printing black.  It prints color.  We have always used HP cartridges and whren this happened we assumed we were out of black ink.  Bought new ones, threw away old ones (should not have) replaced with the new ones and still same.....no black.  Color works fine.  I have cleaned and aligned heads many, many times.  Still no black print or copy.  I have done a hard reset, prayed to the HP "god's" and walked away from it.  Still nothing.

The funny thing.............it just ran out of warranty.  I know Sony is famous for dying after warr runs out.......I didn't know HP did

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
This is a great place to get support, find answers to your technical queries.

I understand that you are getting print quality issue while printing.

Are you facing the same issue while making a copy?

Are you using instant ink or regular cartridge?

Let's clean the area around the ink nozzles

Do not perform these steps unless the test page or printout specifically shows smeared text or track marks. Clean the area around the ink nozzles if you see track marks or smears on the printouts.

Figure : Example of smeared text

Image: Example of smeared text.

Figure : Example of text with track marks

Image: Example of text with track marks.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • Dry foam-rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that does not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)

    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the ink cartridges)

         CAUTION:

Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the area. These can damage the ink cartridge or the printer.

  2. Make sure the printer is on.

  3. Open the scanner lid.

  4. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the ink cartridge access area.

Figure : Open the cartridge access door

Image: Open the cartridge access door.
  5. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  6. To release the ink cartridge, lift the lid on the ink cartridge slot, and then gently push the lid back until it stops.

  7. Pull up on the ink cartridge to remove it from the slot.

Figure : Remove the ink cartridge

    1. Lift the lid

    2. Gently push the lid back

    3. Pull up on the ink cartridge

       CAUTION:

Do not remove both ink cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each ink cartridge one at a time. Do not leave an ink cartridge outside the printer for more than 30 minutes.

  8. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides.

Figure : Hold the ink cartridge by its sides

Image: Hold the ink cartridge by its sides.
  9. Inspect the ink cartridge contacts for ink and debris buildup.

       CAUTION:

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Figure : Do not touch the contacts or nozzles

Image: Do not touch the contacts or nozzles.
  10. Lightly moisten a clean, foam-rubber swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.

  11. Clean the face and edges around the ink nozzle with the swab.

       CAUTION:

Do not clean the ink nozzle plate.

Figure : Clean the area around the ink nozzle
Image: The ink nozzle and ink cartridge contacts.

    1. Nozzle plate - Do not clean

    2. Area surrounding ink nozzle - Do clean

    3. Ink cartridge contacts - Do not clean

  12. Either let the ink cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.

  13. Hold the ink cartridge at a slight upward angle with the ink cartridge contacts facing the rear of the printer, and then slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot.

Figure : Reinstall the ink cartridge

    Image: Reinstall the ink cartridge.
  14. Close the ink cartridge lid to secure the ink cartridge into place.

Figure : Close the ink cartridge lid

Image: Close the ink cartridge lid.
  15. Repeat these steps to clean the area surrounding the ink nozzle on the other ink cartridge.

  16. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  17. try to print.

If you are facing the same issue, Clean the ink cartridges

If you found defects on the Print Quality Diagnostic Report, run an automatic tool to clean the ink cartridges.

   NOTE:

To avoid issues that require cleaning, always turn the printer off with the Power button.

  1. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon .

  2. Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Printhead. The printer cleans the printhead, and then prints a test page.

  3. Check the print quality of the test page.

    • If the print quality is good, touch Done.

    • If the print quality is not good, touch Clean Again. The printer cleans the ink cartridges again, and then prints another test page.

 Align the printer

For the best print quality, align the ink cartridges.

  1. Load plain white paper in the paper tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon .

  3. Touch Tools, and then touch the Down Arrow  once.

  4. Touch Align Printer.

The printer prints a test page, and then prompts you to scan the page.

  5. Lift the scanner lid, and then place the page on the glass according to the instructions on the alignment page.

  6. Close the scanner lid, and then touch OK.

Print another Print Quality Diagnostic report, and examine the page.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you can stop troubleshooting.

  • If the Print Quality Diagnostic report shows track marks or smears, continue to the next step to clean the area around the ink nozzles.

  • If the Print Quality Diagnostic report does not show track marks or smears

However, to provide accurate details, I need a few more details:

I have sent you a private message, for more details that cannot be shared in a public post.

Can you please check your inbox on the forums page for the private message.

Hi Andy,

Swipe your finger from the top to the bottom of your printer screen, then tap the ethernet or wifi icon and locate the printer's IP address.

From your computer open File Explorer and click on This PC on the left pane.

Click the top Computer tab and then click the Map Network Drive button.

Type your printer IP with 2 backslashes ahead (e.g. \\10.0.0.5), press the Browse button and select the Memory Card folder.

Keep the Reconnect at sign-in option checked and complete the wizard, you will now have USB Flash Drive as a virtual disk under This PC.

Regards,

Shlomi

I am sorry this happened - tax season is stressful.

Our community forum is not a direct link to your HP Instant Ink Service.

Yes, the service is supposed to have sent out ink before the very last minute.

If you have the means to obtain purchased ink today,

If you cannot wait to use the printer,

If you are interested,

Consider this Workaround:

  • Stop Web services on the printer
  • Purchase new ink cartridges from a local retailer
  • Remove the Instant Ink cartridges from the printer
  • Replace with regular purchased ink cartridges
  • Complete the alignment
  • Restart the computer and the printer

Printer and laptop not communicating after laptop repair.

I just got my laptop back from being repaired after a devastating spill.  Just about everything was replaced except the case so it is like a brand new computer.  Before this, my printer and laptop worked fine on my wireless network.  The OS is Windows 10 Home.  My wife's laptop and another still work fine.  When I try to install the printer I get the following error message:

 Unsuccessful Network Installation

The printer was unable to be installed over the network.

The printer is set up with a static IP address.  If I try to use Windows to install the printer, it seems to do so but I cant use the Scan to computer function on the printer.

Both devices are attached to the same wireless network.  I have disabled the firewall and antivirus but nothing helps.

Any suggestions?

Re: hp photosmart 5520 cannot connect to network

The issue is not resolved, as far as I'm concerned, unless the printer stays online. As I've said, it has always done this, where it will be online for a little while and then go offline for no apparent reason and stay that way. If it goes a week or a month without going offline, then I'd say maybe the issue is resolved.

HP 4630 photo printing problem

I am having a problem printing on 8.5 X 11 photo paper, using HP smart on my iPad. Only a small portion (10 - 20%) of the photo is printed. The HP Smart Preview looks fine and no error messages are displayed on my iPad or on the printer itself. The printer hums along for a while and ejects the paper just as it does when Inprint on plain paper or 4X6 photo paper. My iPad is using IOS 11.3

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
This is a great place to get support, find answers to your technical queries.

I understand that you are not able to print in color.

Are you using genuine HP ink cartridge?

Is copy working fine with the standalone printer?

Could you please help me with the exact operating system?

However, let's try to Align the printhead using the printer control panel.

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, swipe left, and then touch the Setup icon .

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  3. Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Printhead.

    A test page prints.

Figure : Example of the printhead cleaning test page

Example of the printhead cleaning test page
  4. Examine the test page.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. Repeat these steps for the third cleaning stage, if necessary.

         NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, touch Done.

Make sure the ink cartridges are properly vented and seated correctly

Check the vents on the top of the ink cartridges. If they are clogged or obstructed, the ink cartridges might not work properly, which can affect print quality.

   NOTE:

To avoid print quality issues and dried out ink cartridges, do not leave any ink cartridges outside the printer for longer than 30 minutes.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Figure : Opening the ink cartridge access door

    Open the cartridge access door
  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  4. Press the tab inward on the front of the old ink cartridge to release it, and then pull up on the ink cartridge to remove it from the slot.

Figure : Removing the ink cartridge

  6. If the ink cartridge still has the orange pull-tab attached, pull to remove it.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

I understand that the printer is not recognized.

What happens when you use the old cartridge?

what is the error message when the cartridge is not in the printer?

Try with a different cartridge.

I suggest you do a Hard Reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue persists, I would personally suggest you contact our HP phone support for one on one interaction.
