For general help for new router or printer please refer to this article in our printer database.
Please provide the exact model name of the printer for better assistance as I may be able to find videos to show how to connect or fix the problem. A printer can be a PRO or a PLUS or have the letter 'e' after the number and that can make a big difference. Some printers with the same number ID could be a LaserJet, Deskjet, or Officejet.
Watch the reset video or perform the steps. After resetting, you generally have 2 hours to complete the setup. Decide if you want to connect the printer to the router or to print directly to the printer and bypass the router.
Many HP and other OEM printers have problems with the router when the router has two bands and both bands have the same name (SSID). Log into the modem and rename one of the bands. Alternately, contact your ISP and have them rename a band.
Or simply use Wi-Fi direct (but read note below about Instant Ink).
If English is not your native language or if you wish to get additional information not covered below, then use the HP and Microsoft support assistants. The latest HPSA supports 36 languages and can be downloaded here. Microsoft's AI\ assistant is in the latest Windows 10 and 11 releases and there are instructions here on how to enable the AI. Microsoft's AI assistant (Copilot) has a microphone button and\ supports natural language processing. |
Do not call any phone numbers shown in any of the videos or revealed by a Bing or Google search. You may need to reset your printer.
Disconnecting the USB cable may still leave the printer in the wired or Wi-Fi mode. Connecting an ethernet cable may still leave the printer in Wi-Fi mode. The Wi-Fi reset is used to put Wi-Fi printers into setup mode. Some resets are simple and others require a video to understand. Factory resets cannot be revealed in this forum. To do a factory reset of your printer, you must contact HP.

Wi-Fi reset instructions and videos (if any) are shown below. Generally you have 2 hours to connect your printer after performing the Wi-Fi reset. Note that a reset video may show a slightly different model than yours. Do not call any phone numbers revealed in any video or site.
Microsoft's Copilot may have more recent videos. Watch this video to see how to reset your printer: 6020 6022 6030 6052 6055. The steps below are Wi-Fi only and do not perform a factory reset. Microsoft's Copilot may provide alternate solutions. 6052e

Wi-Fi connection
Ideally, your Wi-Fi printer should connect to the modem or router. If your network has multiple boosters / repeaters, it is possible the printer may connect randomly to any of the units. The router needs to provide the same IP address on every connection. This rarely happens with random connects. An alternate Wi-Fi connection is Wi-Fi direct. Your laptop or smartphone prints directly to the printer and does not go through the router. Note that if you signed up for instant ink or internet printing your printer must also be online through the router. Do not call any phone number revealed in any video or site.
This video shows how to connect to the router: 6055 Wi-Fi Direct can be used to avoid configuring the router. Watch this: 6052e Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 30 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the router. A simple connection to the router can be done by using the WPS pushbutton method. This is explained on page 26 in this User Manual. |
Software
HP updates software periodically. Downloads shown below may be old. You should always visit the Software and Download page to look for new releases. You may need to select an operating system (OS) first. If windows 11 is missing then use 10. You can go as far back as Windows 7, 64bit to get missing drivers. After selecting the OS click the blue Open all button to view all downloads.
Full function printer drivers can be downloaded here: 6052e Full function software for scanning can be downloaded here: 6052e You can find all of the software here. You should select the OS and then look for the phrase "Open All" and click that. 6052e |

How do I unlock a HP 6978 printer? I need to change networks and I cannot access the WiFi setup
the screen on my HP officejet Pro 8600 printer is blank only the home button and the triangles and also ? light display is blank and no number keys. have tried all the resets listed online already.
Thanks for the information, @VikramTheGreat. I tried all of those that I could and then called HP support. The error could not be overcome so the printer landed in the trash can.
Hi my HP Ink Tank Wireless 415 is flashing E and all 6 led also flashing.
Unable to print, status offline.
Already changed printer head but to no avail
I'm having nothing but issues since I got the Hp deskjet. Ive re set it up. Flashing orange light saying printer blocked. I purchased HP cartridges. It just won't print . The printed not blocked . Switched it on and off re inserted cartridges. Thinking of returning it as it's a nightmare.
I walked through every article I could find to clear a paper jam, but the printer won't get out of the screen with the message that there is still a paper jam. There is no paper jam. I see that others have had this same issue throughout the years. Could you tell me how to do a hard reset? Or, if anyone has had any luck with restoring their printer after this consistent error, would you please share a resolution? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Issue with Printer Functionality After Firmware Update!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
From what you've shared, it sounds like a firmware update on 04-01-2025 might have affected how the printer recognizes the remanufactured color cartridges. HP firmware updates can sometimes include security or compatibility changes that impact how non-HP or remanufactured cartridges function. Since the printer became unresponsive after the update, this could very well be the cause.
You've already replaced the black cartridge with a new genuine HP one (great step, by the way!). Given that the issue started after the update and you still have remanufactured color cartridges installed, it's possible that the printer is not recognizing them anymore, which may be preventing it from functioning properly.
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Regards,
Unfortunately, the semi-full reset does not work. When you reconnect the power cord to the printer, it automatically turns on - so there is no valid step to "turn on the printer". The same white screen came back with the blue dots and HP logo. As I am connected to this printer via WiFi - none of the follow up steps to update drivers, etc. can occur because my computers cannot locate the printer due to the status it is in. In order to do the factory defaults, the control panel on the printer needs to be accessible - which it is not.
I have now tried to connect the printer via "hard-line" (not WiFi) to my desktop and get the same white screen with blue dots - so the printer cannot be found on the local network (WiFi) NOR the actual wired connection. So since it cannot be found and the control panel isn't working, there is no way to update drivers, restore defaults, etc.
I have an HP Envy All-In-One printer that will not start. I turn it on and it looks like it starts to load up, but then it freezes. Is it doomed for the electronics recycling file.
I have MacOS, Sequoia 15.3.2 HP DeskJet 2810e all-in-one printer
My printer (Serial Number CN478DWNC5) stopped working some time ago, "out of ink". Inserted new black cartridge, the one with color was hardly used. Despite new black, the printer did not work, still "out of ink" – then also changed the color cartridge. The printer did not work. I restarted the printer and my computer, but the printer still doesn't work. Receives error message; "The printer may be out of ink." I have replaced both cartridges and the control panel indicates that both cartridges are full. The Printer Information Report indicates that the printer is connected to Wi-Fi and that the signal is good.
What should I do to get my printer working again?
Persistent error message after power cycling several (many) times and cleaning heads. Printer won't boot up long enough before error to allow any other input from the keypad/screen

Try these steps:
Check for obstructions in the carriage path
Clear obstructions from the carriage area inside the printer.
With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Open the door to access the carriage inside of the printer.
Look in the carriage path for debris such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels, and then remove any that you find.
Use your hand to move the carriage to each side, making sure it moves freely. If the carriage is stalled or docked to one side of the printer and you cannot move it, continue with these steps.
Close the carriage access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn the printer on.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
