@JANBEN1947, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your red ink cartridge!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It looks like you've already done a great job troubleshooting the issue. Since you're still seeing the error, let's try a few more steps:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet first.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error persists.

Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause supply system errors.

  • Go to HP support website.
  • Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 8740).
  • Check for firmware updates for macOS 10.12 Sierra.
  • If an update is available, download and install it.

Reset the Ink System

  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it for at least 10 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.
  • Reinstall the cartridges one by one, making sure they are securely in place.

Inspect for Internal Damage

  • Check if the cartridge slot is damaged or has bent pins.
  • Try inserting a different set of cartridges (borrow if possible) to rule out cartridge issues.

Disable Cartridge Protection

If your printer was previously used with another HP account, cartridge protection might be active.

  • Open the HP Utility software on your Mac.
  • Go to HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 settings.
  • Look for an option to disable cartridge protection.
  • Restart the printer and test again.

Let me know if any of these steps help!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you so much for the information. I tried the EWS and the printer wants to kick on and print but immediately the yellow light flashes and the E 0 message comes back on. Very frustrating. 😔

The only thing I keep blaming myself for is that when I put in the new HP cartridge I didn’t let the printer finish the alignment copy 😞 and I think I broke my printer. It’s online and ready to go. It just won’t print. The hp app says I have to “correct the cartridge” problem and then cancels the job. I’m subscribed to the Hp app and paper/ink plan. 😩 I don’t know what else to do.

The error code B8A2F2E8 on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus usually indicates a firmware or hardware issue. Since the problem is getting more frequent, here are some troubleshooting steps to try:

Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for at least 5 minutes (longer if possible).
  3. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  4. Turn it back on and check if the error persists.

Update Firmware (If Possible)

Since the touchscreen is unresponsive, updating firmware directly might be difficult. However, if you can get the printer working even briefly:

  1. Go to HP’s Support Website and look for the latest firmware for your model.
  2. Update the firmware via USB or HP Smart app (if accessible).

Let me know if this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

@rerudnick, Thanks for getting back to me!

It looks like the issue is persisting despite basic troubleshooting steps. Here are some advanced solutions you can try:

Reset Printer to Factory Defaults

Since you've already restarted the Mac and the printer, try resetting the printer itself:

  1. On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. After resetting, reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi or Mac.

Delete and Reinstall HP Software Completely

Since copying and scanning work, it indicates that the connection isn't fully broken, but the print function is affected. Let's try reinstalling HP software:

  1. Remove the HP software completely:
    • Go to Applications > HP and uninstall any HP-related software.
    • Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, remove the printer.
    • Restart your Mac.
  2. Download and install fresh HP drivers:
    • Go to HP’s support site and download the latest drivers for the Officejet Pro 8600.
    • Reinstall the printer using the HP software instead of AirPrint.

Check for IP Conflict (If on Wi-Fi)

  • If your printer is on Wi-Fi, ensure that it’s connected to the same network as your Mac.
  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer menu.
  • Find the IP Address and enter it in your Mac’s browser. If it doesn’t open the printer’s web interface, your Mac may not be communicating with it properly.
  • Try manually setting a static IP address in your printer’s network settings.

Check and Reset Printer Permissions

  1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
  2. Go to the Privacy tab and ensure Full Disk Access is enabled for HP software (if applicable).
  3. Reset printing system again:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Right-click in the list and select Reset Printing System.
    • Add the printer again.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
