Hi, I have a problem with a hp office jet pro 8600 at startup it shows the error "printer or ink system error" The Black ink cartridge is the one giving me problems. I tried two brand new cartridges and it gives me this error message. I tried resetting the printer and now I cant get past the setup part of putting in the ink cartridges. I ;have the setup cartridges, but the black ink one is empty and I can't get past this part. I have seen that some people have gotten past this issue, but the solution is sent to them in a private message. Can someone send me the procedure to fix these issues, Thanks.

The persistent error message on the printer states" THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PRINTR OR INK SYSTEM, TRUN PRINTER OFF, THEN ON. IF IF PROBLEM PERSISTS, CONTACT HP."

Hi @AndreaN3,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet 3830 is printing black pages despite sufficient ink levels and a cartridge cleaning, try these additional troubleshooting steps.

Check Print Settings: Make sure you're printing in color mode, not grayscale or black-and-white.

Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.

Check the Printhead: Sometimes the printhead may need further cleaning. Use the printer's built-in cleaning feature to clean the printhead again:

  • Go to the printer’s control panel > Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.

Check for Paper Jams: A small paper jam can sometimes cause printing issues, so ensure there are no obstructions in the printer.

Try Printing a Diagnostic Report: You can print a test page or diagnostic report to check if the issue is with the cartridges or something else:

  • On the printer, go to Setup > Reports > Printer Status Report.

Reinstall Cartridges: Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges to ensure they are properly seated and making good contact.

Software Updates: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Visit the HP support site for your printer model and check for the latest updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Dan8211,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 may have a misreading of the paper path or sensor issues. Here are steps to troubleshoot the issue.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Try turning it on and off again using the power button.

Check for Actual Paper Jam:

  • Open the printer's access doors and paper tray.
  • Inspect the paper feed and rollers for any small pieces of paper stuck inside. Even small bits of paper can trigger the error message.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset on the printer. This can sometimes clear sensor issues:
    • With the printer turned on, press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds until it shuts down completely.
    • Wait for a few moments, then turn it on again.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Look inside the printer’s paper tray and the areas around the print head for any paper fragments or foreign objects that could be causing a blockage.
  • Make sure the ink cartridge area is free from obstructions.

Run a Printer Diagnostic:

  • If the printer powers on, run the HP Print and Scan Doctor (if you can connect the printer to a computer). This tool can help identify issues.

Check the Power Button:

  • If the power button is unresponsive, try resetting the printer's settings:
    • Turn the printer off and unplug it from the power source.
    • After a few minutes, reconnect the power and turn the printer back on using the power button.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I solved the problem. It took me 3 evenings . I tried everything , every combination of buttons for the hard reset . Finally the pc application solved it. I did the toner cleaning, and the application did the hard reset. I am very happy. Hi from Hungary.

Dear Elohi,

Thank you for getting back to me.

Yes. I do receive an error message. The printer cannot print simple PDFs, or in the case of Word, the message is error printing. The printer cannot print. even test page, the printer doesn't print.

I tried different applications, and as you suggested, I will try to print from my mobile.

The printer is online and available to print

Thanks

I have a  HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a.

My printer out of nowhere started showing  an error message that says "printer failure: there is a problem with the printer or ink system. turn printer off, then on. if problem persist contact HP." I shut it down, unplugged it, removed all the ink and reinserted the ink and it still kept popping up the same message. So now i am contacting HP, what do i do to fix this?

Continuous ink error message

I suddenly got an error message on my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing remove continuous ink system and install original HP or compatible cartridges". It is highlighting my Cyan and Yellow cartridges. I have only ever used original HP cartridges, new. I have swapped out both cartridges with new ones and still get the message. I've uninstalled and reinstalled my printer. Still the message remains. This happened all of a sudden. It will not allow me to print. What is a continuous ink system?

Any ideas on a fix?

Thanks!

Hi @Hanli,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP DeskJet 2600 printer is only offering a grayscale option and not color, the issue may be related to the print driver, settings, or a misconfiguration. Here's how to troubleshoot:

1. Check the Print Driver Configuration

  • Open Control Panel> Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your HP DeskJet 2600 printer and select Printer Properties.
  • Go to the Advanced tab and click Printing Defaults.
    • Ensure the color option is selected (not grayscale).
  • Also, check the Preferences or Print Settings tab for color settings.

2. Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Download the latest driver for your printer from the HP Support website.
    • Ensure you download the full feature software package for your printer model.
  • Uninstall the current driver:
    • Open Control Panel> Programs> Programs and Features, locate the HP software, and uninstall it.
  • Restart your computer and reinstall the driver using the downloaded package.

3. Adjust Printer Settings in HP Smart App HP printer setup (HP Smart app)

  • Open the HP Smart App.
  • Select your printer and go to Printer Settings.
  • Look for a Color Options or Advanced Settings menu.
    • Ensure Color Printing is enabled.

4. Check Printer Preferences During Printing

When printing a document or image:

  1. Select Print from the application (e.g., Word, browser, or photo viewer).
  2. In the Print dialog box, click Printer Properties or Preferences.
  3. Locate the Color or Quality tab and ensure Color is selected instead of grayscale.

5. Verify Cartridges

  • Ensure that the color cartridge is installed correctly and has sufficient ink.
  • Perform a cartridge alignment and test page from the printer control panel.

6. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect and turn it back on, then try printing again.

@ GriffinM - I had the same results, except I replaced the depleted black ink cartridge with a brand new HP cartridge.  I even returned the ink and bought a different new cartridge......same Printer Failure message.  The only difference I see, is the number on the front of the cartridge is slightly different.  The old cartridge says CN045A, while both of the new ones I bought say CN045AN.  However, the HP website says that CN045AN is supposed to work.

False ADF Paper Jam Error

My HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One printer is displaying a persistent "Document Feeder Jam" error despite no actual paper jam being present. This error message prevents me from scanning or accessing the printer's touch panel. While printing still functions, other essential features are unavailable.

The printer indicates a jam in the top document feeder, displaying an animation demonstrating its removal. I've thoroughly inspected the entire printer, but found no signs of a jam. I attempted to resolve the issue by cleaning suspected sensors and rollers with compressed air and alcohol wipes, I've also followed all available troubleshooting guides, but the error persists.

Thanks for your return message - tried every one of these and still get the printer busy error! Even unloaded the software and reinstalled to no avail! My printer control panel now shows grayed items and tells me that the grayed features have been locked by the person that set up the printer????? I set up the printer as ADMINISTRATOR. Don't understand what changed!
