Hi,
I have an HP PSC 2175 all-in one. (Yes, I know it's rather old, but it serve me well.) When using it under Windows 7 (with the built-in/default Windows driver), it generally works okay. But I've found a problem.
There are times I want to print standard-sized photos from various applications, but I want to do a test print on plain paper before trying it on photo paper. With plain paper loaded, I open my apps' Print dialog, click Preferences, and set the Print Quality (Printing Preferences, Paper/Quality tab) to "Maximum DPI", then attempt to print the photo.
The printer will start to process the print job... then unexpectedly reset itself. The Scan/Copy/Photo Card buttons flash, and Windows plays the "device disconnected" sound effect, followed by the "device connected" sound effect, as though the PSC 2175 had been unplugged, then plugged back in. Then the printer goes through its usual start-up motions, with "Initializing" displayed on the LCD panel). While it's doing this, several sheets of paper get pulled through, without anything printing on them. Once the printer finishes initializing, Windows tries to restart the print job, at which point it happens all over again. I end up having to cancel the print job from Windows.
Further testing reveals the printer will do this with any print job, whether photo, text, or mixed, if "Maximum DPI" is selected in the Printing Preferences while plain paper is loaded. It does NOT have this problem when printing to photo paper; in that configuration, the printout works normally. It seems that the printer simply doesn't like the combination of plain-paper and Maximum DPI, but whether this is a problem with the printer itself or a driver issue, I have no idea.
I notice that the blue LED on the printhead carriage (which scans the paper to determine the paper type) turns on when the paper has been pulled in and loaded; the printer resets itself right after the paper-scan happens.
The PSC 2175 is connected to a computer running Windows 7 64-bit, fully-updated from Windows Update, and is using the default (built-in) driver.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, with this or other PSCs? I've had the printer for years, and never had this problem until now, but then I've never attempted the combination of plain-paper and the Maximum DPI setting before.
