Hi @aprint235,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding scanner error!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The "Scanner Error 17" on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw typically indicates a hardware issue with the scanner assembly or a communication problem between the scanner and printer components.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds to ensure any residual power drains from the printer.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the error persists.

2. Check for Obstructions

  • Open the scanner lid and check for any paper or objects obstructing the scanner mechanism.
  • Ensure there are no stuck pieces of paper or debris blocking the scanner area or paper path.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a hard reset by following these steps:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Press and hold the "Cancel" and "Job Cancel" buttons at the same time.
    3. While holding these buttons, turn the printer back on.
    4. Hold the buttons until the printer resets and restarts.
    5. After the printer restarts, check if the error is cleared.

4. Check Scanner Connections (If Applicable)

  • If the printer has a removable scanner module (depending on model), ensure that it is properly seated and connected.
  • Disconnect and reconnect any cables that may be involved with the scanner component.

5. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Ensure that your printer's firmware is up-to-date.
  • You can check for firmware updates through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Support website.

6. Printer Diagnostics

  • Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool on your computer. This tool will automatically diagnose and resolve any printer issues.
    • You can download it from: HP Print and Scan Doctor.

7. Perform a Scanner Calibration

  • If the scanner is misaligned, you may need to perform a scanner calibration.
  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Scanner Calibration and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try these steps and let me know if the error goes away or if further assistance is needed!
