@Doug528,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check Printer Status and Connection

  • Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to your computer or network. If it’s a wireless printer, confirm it’s connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Check for any errors or warning lights on the printer’s display panel.

Cancel All Print Jobs

  • On your computer, open the Print Queue. In Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click on your printer, and select See what's printing. On Mac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • If there are any pending print jobs, cancel them. Sometimes stuck print jobs can cause the printer to remain in a "busy" state.

Restart Printer and Computer

  • Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source for about 1 minute. Then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart your computer to ensure the printer and your system are both fresh and clear of any temporary issues.

Check Printer Queue Again

  • After restarting, check the print queue again to see if any jobs are still stuck. If they are, try clearing them.

Update Printer Drivers

  • Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause issues. Ensure that your printer drivers are up to date.
  • Visit HP's official support page and download the latest drivers for your HP DeskJet 4255e model.

Check for Paper Jams or Low Ink

  • Inspect your printer for paper jams or any foreign objects that might be obstructing the printer's path.
  • Make sure the ink or toner cartridges have sufficient ink and are properly installed.

Reinstall the Printer

  • Uninstall the printer from your computer (you can do this in the Printers & Scanners on a Mac).
  • Restart your computer, then reinstall the printer either by plugging it in or connecting it via Wi-Fi.

Reset the Printer

  • If the printer is still showing as busy, perform a reset:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    • Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, a firmware update can fix issues like this. Go to the printer's settings on the HP website or the HP Smart app (if you use it) to see if there are any available updates. HP Firmware and drivers.

Perform a Printer Self-Test

  • Many printers have a built-in self-test to check for hardware issues. Refer to your user manual or the HP support website to see how to run this on your model.
