Hi again Dan's Dad.
Thanks for sending the other thread.
I saw the All_ALM_Types_OFF.prn file. Didn't understand what it did but since one of the other parties
had reported some success with it, I gave it a try. I've done a little with PJL commands before so I used one of
my standard PJL text files and pasted the commands from this file into it. My normal method is to open the ftp connection in my browser and drag 'n drop the PJL command file onto the folder icon. I followed this approach and tried again to print Letterhead from Tray 5 but it still reverted to duplex. V. frustrating.
Now, from this point things took an interesting turn.
Remember I said that the CP4525 service manual indicated there should be an Alternative Letterhead Mode [I'll
just say ALM from now on] sub-menu on the control panel but it wasn't there? Well, I decided to print the menu map
to see if I gave me any clues. In fact, the menu map showed me that there are individual ALM swiches for pretty much
every paper type hiding in a sub-menu called ADJUST PAPER TYPES in the PRINT QUALITY menu. I can only presume that
the service manual information was an error. With this new information, I set the ALM switch to OFF
for Letterhead and tried printing again. Guess what? No change - still duplexing from Tray 5.
As I wasn't getting anywhere, I thought I might try a different approach by selecting Tray 2 as A4, Letterhead and Trays 3, 4 &5 as A4, Plain. I guess at the back of my mind I blamed the problem on Tray 5. Anyway, I set up the driver short-cuts accordingly and with the ADJUST PAPER TYPES Letterhead ALM set to OFF I tried printing Letterhead from Tray 2.
Still no change!!!
For no particular reason I connected to the printer EWS via my browser, navigated to the ADJUST PAPER TYPES sub-menu and found the Letterhead ALM setting. I'm pretty sure that it was ON [which seemed strange] so I reset it to
OFF. I don't think I expected any better outcome than before but when I tried printing Letterhead from Tray 2 this time
it printed simplex, not duplex, and the text was on the front. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I tried it again just to confirm that it had happened and once again it printed simplex correctly. I couldn't understand what I had done that was different from what I had tried before.
I've left the most amazing bit to last. After the success with Tray 2, I thought I would give Tray 5 one last shot so I reconfigured all the Trays back to the original settings and similarly with the driver short-cuts. Yes, you probably saw this coming - it worked perfectly from Tray 5 just as it had done from Tray 2.
Alls well that ends well. I just wish I had a definitive explanation for why it is now working. Perhaps the ALM switch only works via the EWS and not from the control panel? I don't have a clue, but I would like to thank you again for your participation in this process and maybe you were right all along about ALM affecting the tray behaviour.
