Officejet 6500 and Mavericks

I upgraded to Mavericks when I got my new MacBook Pro last month. I have just tried connecting the printer and it's a no go. After HOURS of searching this ... website... I found these directions:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03967522&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4159&product=4083977&sw_lang=#N323

Unfortunately, I followed them and uninstalled the HP Software before installing the new software. Before I had done so, I was just messing around hoping to find a solution and I tried re-adding the printer (which my computer can see) and it had the box "USE" which had the printer name (Officejet 6500 blah blah)  and the AirPrint option both. Figuring I didn't know as much as the official folks who made the product, I decided to research online before clicking the printer's name in the USE box and installing the printer. :(

Now that I've uninstalled the software per the directions, only AirPrint is available. I cannot find Officejet 6500 in the USE box even if I click select software. I tried AirPrint anyway and found that the computer says the printer is available to use but nothing actually prints and certainly nothing scans as it says there is no scanning software for this product. I've spent 2 hours on this website trying to find a solution at this point and am thoroughly exasperated. Guess I'll just have to scan everything at work tomorrow. :( :( :(
