HP 6600 printing on paper less than 8.5" wide

I recently purchased an HP 6600 printer.  I am running Windows 7 on a PC and am using Word 2007.

I can insert a #10 envelope into the input tray and move the left and right paper guides to support the envelope and print the envelope with the address and return address at the approptiate places.

I have a word document for an 8.875" x 5.75" envelope that I have printed for years on my old HP 5500 printer which just had a left movable paper guide. When I try to print one of these envelopes on my new HP 6600, I move the left and right paper guides (of course, they move in and out together).  Then when I print the envelope, the HP6600 prints it as if the envelope were all the way against the right side of the paper tray rather than in the middle of the paper tray.  I have tried to trick the printer by selecting #10 envelope or 5x7" as the paper size in the printer properties but the envelope always prints incorrectly as if the envelope is against the right side of the paper tray rather than in the middle of the paper tray.

This seems very strange to me.  Why would HP design a printer so that the left and right paper guides move in and out together and then not be able to print on paper that is less than 8.5' wide correctly?

Maybe I am missing something.  I searched on the Forum first and saw some posts about problems printing on paper that was not listed as a paper size in the printer properties.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
