I understand your printer keeps showing a “printhead missing” error for the black printhead, even after replacing it with a new one. Let’s go through some steps to identify and resolve this issue.

 

1. Power Cycle the Printer

Turn the printer off and unplug it from the power source.

Wait at least 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.

Sometimes a reset clears false error messages.

 

2. Check Printhead Installation

Open the access door and remove the black printhead.

Reinsert it firmly into its slot until you hear a click.

Ensure both the latch and locking mechanism are fully secured.

 

3. Inspect the Electrical Contacts

Remove the printhead again and check for ink buildup, dust, or damage on the gold-colored electrical contacts.

Gently clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.

Let it dry completely before reinserting.

 

4. Examine the Carriage and Connector

Look inside the carriage (the slot where the printhead sits) for any debris, ink spills, or bent pins.

If pins are bent or damaged, the printer may not recognize the printhead.

 

5. Update Printer Firmware

Go to the printer’s settings or use the HP Smart app to check for available firmware updates.

Sometimes firmware fixes false “printhead missing” errors.

 

6. Try Both Old and New Printheads

Insert the old printhead back in, even if defective, to see if the error changes.

If both printheads show the same “missing” error, the issue is likely with the printer carriage or logic board, not the printhead itself.
