If the question mark indicator on your HP Smart Tank 651 printer's operation panel persists despite following the suggested resolutions, it might be helpful to perform a few additional checks and steps:
1. Perform a Printhead Alignment
Even if you’ve done this before, try again:
- On the printer panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead
- Follow the on-screen instructions
2. Check for Firmware Updates

Use HP Smart or HP Easy Start to install updates.
3. Restart and Reset
Try a hard reset:
- Turn off the printer
- Unplug it from power for 5 minutes
- Plug it back in and turn it on
If that doesn’t help, try a factory reset:
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults
⚠️ This will remove Wi-Fi settings and custom preferences, so be prepared to reconnect the printer afterwards.
