It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2640 is stuck in sleep mode and not waking up properly for print jobs, which is also affecting its Wi-Fi connection. Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to fix this.
Steps to Fix Sleep Mode & Connectivity Issues:
Disable Sleep Mode (If Available)
- Open HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
- Navigate to Settings > Power Management and look for a sleep mode option.
- If available, disable or extend the sleep timer.
Assign a Static IP Address
- On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Wireless Settings > Print Network Configuration Page.
- Note the IP address and enter it manually in your router settings.
- This prevents the printer from disconnecting when idle.
Reset the Printer’s Network Connection
- Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer until the light starts blinking.
- Run HP Easy Start on your computer and reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi.
Update the firmware on an HP printer:
- HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.

Check Router Settings
- Ensure the printer is connected to the 2.4GHz network (not 5GHz).
- Disable AP Isolation in router settings, as it can block communication.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows Alternative)
- If you have access to a Windows PC, run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose deeper issues.
- It can sometimes resolve problems that macOS tools miss.
