@pvonh, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The E1 error on the HP Smart Tank 6001 All-in-One typically refers to a paper feed issue—meaning the printer is having trouble picking up the paper, even if it’s correctly loaded.
Since you've already:
- Cleaned the printer with compressed air
- Run cleaning cycles
- Ensured the correct paper is used
Here are some additional steps to try:
Check the Paper Type and Quality
- Use clean, high-quality paper—not damp, curled, or too thin/thick.
- Fan the stack before loading to prevent sheets from sticking.
- Do not overfill the input tray.
Reset the Printer
Sometimes, internal errors persist until a full power reset:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the power outlet and from the back of the printer.
- Wait 1–2 minutes.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Manually Clean the Paper Pickup Rollers
Even if you've used compressed air, manually cleaning the rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol is often more effective:
- Open the rear access or input tray area.
- Locate and gently clean the gray rubber rollers.
- Rotate the rollers manually to clean the entire surface.
- Let them dry fully before using the printer.
Try a Paper Feed Diagnostic (from the HP Smart App or Printer Menu)
HP printers often have a paper feed diagnostic or firmware update option via the HP Smart App or embedded control panel. Try running:
- Paper Path Test
- Firmware Update
Check for Obstructions or Worn Rollers
- Look closely with a flashlight to ensure no paper scraps or foreign objects are inside the path.
- If rollers are glossy or smooth, they may be worn out and unable to grip paper—these would need replacement.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
