Hi @kmichaelc,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your cartridges!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure that you are using genuine HP 61 ink cartridges, as third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause errors.
2. Re-seat the Ink Cartridges
- Open the ink cartridge access door.
- Remove both ink cartridges and re-seat them securely in their respective slots.
- Close the access door and check if the error message persists.
3. Inspect the Ink Cartridges
- Check for any protective tape that might still be attached to the electrical contacts of the cartridges. If present, remove it.
- Inspect the cartridges for any visible damage or ink leakage.
4. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the electrical contacts (gold-colored contacts) on the ink cartridges.
- Similarly, clean the ink cartridge slots in the printer.
- Re-insert the ink cartridges, plug in the printer, and turn it on.
5. Printhead Alignment
- Sometimes, the printer requires alignment after inserting new cartridges.
- Access the printer’s control panel, navigate to the settings menu, and select the option to align the printhead.
6. Update Printer Firmware
Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.
7. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
8. Check for Error Messages
- If the error message persists, it may be helpful to run HP’s troubleshooting diagnostic tool:
- Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP website.
- Run the tool and follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and resolve the issue.
9. Replace Faulty Cartridge
- If the error persists and the above steps did not resolve the issue, it is possible that one or both of the ink cartridges are faulty. Contact HP Customer Support or the retailer where you purchased the cartridges for a replacement.
I hope this helps.
