Hi @bmpitt87, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your HP printer. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the "printer in error state" issue:

Check Connections:

  • Ensure your printer is properly connected to your computer or network.
  • For wireless printers, make sure it's connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
  • For USB printers, try using a different USB port or cable.

Restart Devices:

  • Turn off your printer and unplug it for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart your computer as well.

Check for Paper Jams or Low Ink:

  • Open the printer and check for any jammed paper.
  • Ensure there are no low ink warnings on the control panel.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest drivers for your printer model.

Set Printer as Default & Clear Print Queue:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer and select "Set as Default Printer."
  • Open the print queue and cancel any stuck print jobs.

Check Windows Services (For Windows Users):

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Find "Print Spooler," right-click it, and select "Restart."

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you might want to perform a hard reset on the printer. Here's how:

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  2. Remove any USB cables if present.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes, then press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then into the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and wait for it to become idle.
  6. Reinsert the ink cartridges and try printing a test page

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
