Hi @gpalmer4,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Genuine HP cartridge not communicating correctly with the printer" error on your HP ENVY Inspire 7958e can be caused by several factors, including firmware issues, dirty cartridge contacts, or a defective cartridge. Try these troubleshooting steps.
Reseat the Ink Cartridges
- Turn the printer ON.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the black ink cartridge.
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly into its slot.
- Close the cartridge access door and check if the error persists.
Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts
- Turn OFF the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the affected ink cartridge.
- Use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge.
- Allow the cartridge to dry for a minute.
- Reinstall the cartridge, power the printer back on, and check if the issue is resolved.
Check for Firmware Updates
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- If an update is available, install it.
- Restart the printer and check if the error disappears.
Reset the Printer
- With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the back.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord to the printer and the outlet.
- Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.
Try a Different Cartridge
- If possible, install a different genuine HP black ink cartridge.
- If the new cartridge works, the previous one may be defective.
Verify Instant Ink Subscription (If Applicable)
- If you’re using HP Instant Ink, ensure your subscription is active.
- Go to HP Smart App > Printer Settings > Ink Status to check if HP has detected a problem with the cartridge.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
