Hi @robhob20,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
That error message usually indicates an issue with either the printer’s firmware, the cartridge's chip, or a problem with the printer’s ink system. Since you’ve tried multiple black cartridges, let’s go through some troubleshooting steps.
Check Cartridge Authenticity
- Ensure the black ink cartridge is a genuine HP cartridge and is compatible with your printer model. You can verify authenticity using the HP Smart app or HP's website.
Clean the Cartridge & Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
- Remove the black cartridge.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
- Let it dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridge.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and disconnect it from power for about 5 minutes.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
- Reinstall the cartridge and check if the error persists.
Update Printer Firmware
- Go to HP Support and download the latest firmware update for your printer.
- Install it using HP Smart or via a USB-connected computer.
Try Another Black Cartridge (If Possible)
- If you have another new HP black ink cartridge, try installing it to rule out a faulty chip.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
