Hi @Charlton11, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The E4 error on your HP Smart Tank 581 printer indicates a paper jam or paper feed issue. Since you've already followed the visual assistant's steps without success, try these additional troubleshooting steps:
Power Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for 1-2 minutes to allow the internal components to reset.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Check for Paper Jams
- Open the ink access door and inspect for any jammed paper. Even small pieces of paper can trigger an error.
- Remove the rear access door and look for any stuck paper.
- Gently pull out any jammed paper without tearing it.
- Check the input and output tray for obstructions.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Locate the paper feed rollers (inside the input tray).
- Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently clean the rollers.
- Let them dry completely before turning the printer back on.
Check the Paper Type and Alignment
- Ensure you are using the correct paper type (A4, Letter, etc.).
- Remove all paper from the input tray and fan the stack to prevent sticking.
- Load the paper properly and adjust the paper width guides.
Run the Printer Self-Test
- Turn the printer on.
- Press and hold the Resume button for about 5 seconds until the printer starts printing a test page.
- If the printer does not take in paper, the paper feed mechanism may be faulty.
Update Printer Firmware
- Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads and check if there is a firmware update available.
- Install the update and restart your printer.
