Hi @meggriff ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your printer keeps giving me an error and won't shutdown. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to the issue.
Here are steps to resolve the issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978:
Step 1: Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer (if possible) using the Power button.
- Unplug the printer from the power source and any other connected devices.
- Wait at least 2–3 minutes.
- Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip) and turn it back on.
Step 2: Inspect the Cartridges
- Open the cartridge access door and check for any obstructions or debris.
- Remove all cartridges and inspect them for:
- Damaged contacts (gold/copper contacts).
- Leaks or physical damage.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
- Reinstall the cartridges securely in their slots.
Step 3: Check for Paper Jams Thoroughly
Even if the printer says there is no paper jam:
- Open all access areas (rear access door, duplexer, and input tray) and inspect for any small bits of paper or debris.
- Roll the printer rollers gently to ensure they move freely.
Step 4: Update the Printer Firmware
- If the printer can connect to your network, check for firmware updates:
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- If the printer can't connect to the network, download the firmware from HP's support site and install it using a USB connection.
Step 5: Check the Cartridge Problem
- Confirm that you are using genuine HP cartridges.
- If the issue persists with one cartridge:
- Remove it and try to operate the printer with the remaining cartridges.
- Replace the problematic cartridge with a new one.
Step 6: Perform a Semi-Full Reset
A semi-full reset can clear error states:
- With the printer powered on, unplug it.
- Press and hold the Power and Cancel buttons while plugging the printer back in.
- Release the buttons when the printer powers on.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
