I recently loaded a new Black 902XL cartridge into my HP 6978. It came back with "....missing or damaged cartridge...". I tried all the steps suggested:
- clean contacts both on cartridge & inside cartridge slot
- purchased/installed another new cartridge
- unplug the printer from the wall &removed cord from back of printer; waited 2-3 min, then held the power button in for 30 seconds
- I put the original cartridge back in - it still had a little ink left before I replaced it - still same message
I noticed there was no label/tape of any kind on my original new cartridge or the new new cartridge. I thought it was strange when I properly took off the original wrapping, as indicated on the instructions, it didn't leave label/tape on the top of the cartridge. This even occurred when I unwrapped the new new cartridge as I mentioned.
I decided to put a piece of scotch tape over the top of the cartridge like the color cartridges. Put the cartridge back in the printer, closed the lid & worked like a charm. I looked at the original wrapping & the label that should have not come off had no adhesive to keep it on top of the cartridge. Note: I had the original new cartridge shipped to me from a large electronics retailer in May; the new new cartridge I purchased today was from a local retail store of same company.
I am so glad I noticed the missing label or I was ready to go buy a new printer....as previous discussions/advice indicated.
Hope this helps someone else.
