Sadly I too have wasted too many hours with this same issue - specifically UN-reliable pick-up of ANY paper type from my Tray 1. You can tell that I'm frustrated and infuriated and fed-up with this issue - from the one printer manufacturer that was once the Rolls Royce of all printer manufacturers.
Yes, I've logged back onto this Forum just now specifically to vent steam about this hugely disappointing printer design flaw. And yes ... I'm using non-HP-brand Kodak Premium paper ... but that simple fact should NOT be a justification for this printer NOT to pick up and properly handle ANY modern paper-type.
Edited to add: My printer is an Officejet Pro 8600 N911g - CM750A - Firmware Version CLP1CN1304AR.
Until I replace this printer with another one that doesn't waste my time, I'm resorting to the risky but so far tolerably dependable ploy of sticking a square inch of high-tack masking tape onto the back surface of each page of my Kodak Premium paper, at the point on the leading-edge of the page (its rear surface of course) where the so-called pick-up roller will theoretically "grab" the sheet. This is the small area of the page where the ineffective roller has instead been burnishing the page to a beautifully high but useless gloss, as it fails repeatedly to grab the page. My masking tape ploy is working with about 90% reliability. Thank goodness - otherwise I'd be getting NO prints done atall.
This is unforgivable in a printer as 'young' as mine, and in such a recently designed machine.
Exasperated and angry ...
