Well this has been a highly edifying read. My MFP 281fdw has done precisely the same thing as everyone else who has posted here. I'm really quite furious about it and feel strongly that HP must be held to account.
This printer was purchased in fine working order from the school where I previously worked. It was behaving very well until - just like everyone else - the firmware upgrade installed. I'm not a proper repair tech, but have tinkered with (and successfully repaired) other computer-based equipment carefully following online DIY vids, pages, etc, so I was prepared to try and search out any parts that needed replacing.
Whilst it has been good to read that some have managed to replace the offending board, I now feel that this is not a viable option for those who are not that way inclined and who also cannot afford a brand new printer.
HP OWES US!
If they cannot redress the problem via repair software for the users worldwide, then they owe us replacement FREE replacement parts and FREE installation by authorised repair techs. How many customers are they prepared to lose and how much bad press are they willing to endure?
I for one would be prepared to take to any media platform. Has anyone started a petition?
