If you are using a Notebook, you might try the following to be sure the drivers are being read correctly from the Operating System:
- Perform the Hard Reset . Boot the computer and log in
Hard Reset is a Driver Reset; this is NOT the Windows 8 Reset that installs the Operating System. The Hard Reset procedure does not wipe out your files nor does it destroy your Windows setup in any way.

Although the Full Feature Software may have not been rewritten, it appears the package has been certified to run on Windows 8.1 -- you may wish to reinstall the software in the event that the upgrade messed with one or more of the library files.
Select your printer from HP OfficeJet 6500 Series
After selecting your OS and scrolling down,
Look for the Full Feature Software in Category Driver - Product Installation Software
NOTE:
Remove the existing version of the FFS and RESTART the system before installing the replacement package.

It may be that the Quicken software you are using is not certified for Windows 8.1 -- even if it can be run on the newer Operating System, you may need to reinstall the program.
