@Ruby Devine:  You DON'T have to buy a SmartFriend subscription, at least I didn't.  I absolutely refused!!  Instead, I just hooked up my new HP printer via a USB cord directly to my PC and once my PC recognized the new device & installed the latest drivers, I was good to go.  All I have to do is click on 'Print' on whatever I want printed and it works, WITHOUT having to pay $3.00 a month for a subscription (in order to print 50 copies per month which I never print that many copies in a month anyhow).  You can also scan items directly from your PC too.  But I don't think you'll be able to use the wireless connection without giving in and paying a monthly fee to HP (what a scam!!!).  I was in the same situation as you; I was trying to figure out how to use the **bleep** thing without having to pay a monthly fee & by then it was too late to return it to get my money back.  You DON'T need to pay extra to HP just to print a few copies every month, that's just a rip-off by HP.  I will never buy another HP product again and when this printer stops working, you'd better believe I'll just go out & get one made by a different company.
