I'm not the Editor of a great Magazine or Newspaper but sometimes, I just can't resist editorializing. Somehow, we've all gotten used to not being asked hardware questions like where the knobs will go on our new TV sets or what and where the accessories will be on the new cars that we buy. But, doesn't it go a bit too far when this penchant for telling us: “what we're gonna get – like it or not!” extends even to little BUTTONS on our Computer Printers such as "Fit to Page."
The older H-P psc 1210 All-in-One Printer had such a feature and it was really useful for enlarging small images when the Printer was operating "Stand-Alone" without being connected to the Computer. This feature alone made this particular Printer the "Queen of the inexpensive Copiers."
To supplement this feature, H-P had furnished a Computer Software Program entitled "H-P Director" with six Icons - one of which was "COPY." The large "box" of choices that appeared on your screen when you selected "PRINT" offered SIZES expressed as a Percent of the original (if the "Fit to Page" feature had stopped working on your "Stand-Alone" Printer, you could hook it up to the Computer and use this as a "Work-Around" by selecting 200% and it would still furnish an acceptable oversized Print -- driven solely by the Software).
Now enter the newer H-P Deskjet 2050 All-in-One Printer; both as a Wireless and Cable Hook-up type. This Printer would also work as a copier in "Stand Alone" mode. Unfortunately, the Engineers dropped the "Fit to Page" BUTTON feature from the face of the Printer, and left thousands of loyal H-P fans stranded. Worse yet, the Software Program H-P Director would not transport to the newer Windows 7 (or later 8) Operating System and so, that "Work Around" avenue was closed.
Those who still posessed and operated a H-P psc 1210 All-in-One Printer together with a newer Computer (including 64 Bit) found that the "box" of choices that appeared on your screen when they selected PRINT still showed Percent of Increase for SIZE as an option. But those who possessed and operated the Deskjet 2050 All-in-One Printer were in for a rude shock because the the selection "box" that appeared on your screen when they selected PRINT had no place to change the size of the finished print-out.
H-P has resumed furnishing the Fit to Page feature on the Deskjet 3510 All-in-One Printer. In the advertising specifications, they state:
"COPY REDUCE/ENLARGE SETTINGS
Fit to Page"
That's nice and the Printer is inexpensive. But, we old H-P customers would appreciate hearing about some Software Program that would guarantee desired enlargements both where the Fit to Page BUTTON no longer works or where the H-P Printer Model was never equipped with this feature in the first place.
Why can't H-P modify the "H-P Director" Software Program (that worked so well on Windows Home XP -- 32 Bit) so that it is transportable to the newer Windows 7 and 8 Operating Systems? (Every time I tried to do this on my H-P COMPAQ Presario CQ56 Computer (64 Bit), Windows 7 (64 Bit Version) said: "This Program is incompatible." This sounds like something that is "fixable" with just a few lines of code or maybe a MACRO. LtCol.
