Well I had suspicions of what might be causing my version of this problem, so I finally decided to research into it. I has come to UPNP on the printer needing to be disable.
You see the printer works fine under USB and was working until I had router issues that lead me to replace it. I logged to the IP address of the printer and went to the network tab and clicked on then on networking. Then I went and clicked on the UPnP and disable it. Bingo the printer no longer error codes.
To me it seems that somebody’s implementation of this protocol is causing some sort of buffer overflow or something similar to it and the printer just decides to freak. Here’s a bit of my back story and see if it’s similar to anyone else or this solution just works in general.
I have the HP Photosmart 7515 which I bought from big house close two years ago. I also had a NETGEAR WNDR 3700 router for about that long, maybe a bit longer. This router has worked flawlessly and even upgraded the firmware on it to DD-WRT to get some the extra functions not built into the stock firmware. One day I decided to upgrade the firmware on the NETGEAR and did so incorrectly and bricked it. So I decided to go buy a better router that had feature sets that I wanted. I settled on the ASUS RT-AC68R, I setup the router and that’s when things started up. The printer began to error code and when I would power cycle the printer it would work for 10 to 13 minutes before it would error code again.
I started looking in to what the error code meant and basically what came from it was it was just some general code and try these stupid things and see if it works, those things were power cycling by pulling the plug and or pull out the print head and clean it. I tried various variations and it would still error code. I asked in different forums to see if anybody had any clue and never got a response.
I started thinking it might be a router issue, so I had a LINKSYS E1200 router lying around and decided to test it. I connected the printer to the router via WIFI but no internet. The printer would not error code, believing that maybe the ASUS is defective I unbricked the NETGEAR and was ready to return the ASUS. I managed to unbrick it but guess what the printer still error coded! So at this point I knew it wasn’t the ASUS and that it had to be something with the HP printer. I have tried different combination of settings on the printer and router. Things like static and dynamic IP, disabling the router firewall, disabling UPnP on the router, different versions of firmware on the ASUS. I really can’t remember if I upgraded the firmware on the printer before I bought the ASUS I believe that I checked and there was an upgrade option at the time and that I did, and since HP doesn’t have a way known to me to allow me to downgrade the printer firmware there’s no real way to know if it’s a firmware bug that’s affecting people with certain types of setups. I wish the HP support team would be more vocal on these forums to try and tackle this problem and not direct out of warranty people to a pay for tech support line or just unplug or clean out your print heads as the solution.
